ABSTRACT

We argue that many forms of counterproductive work behavior (CWB) can be understood better through an examination of individuals' emotional adaptive efforts trying to survive in the organizational setting. An emotionbased, process model of CWB is developed based on two emotion theories: the psychoevolutionary theory and the constructivist view of emotion. We view emotion as a chain of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral reactions to stimuli events, and discuss several “problem points” in the emotion process that may lead ultimately to CWB. The chapter concludes with a discussion of organizational implications and suggestions for future research and practice.
