ABSTRACT
Novelists invent their imaginary worlds by tapping into some personal source of creativity. How they do this has been a matter for conjecture (among readers) and angst (among writers) throughout the ages: Where, oh where, is the muse to be found? In my interviews with 40 successful authors of fiction, I learned that many writers enter a state of flow that is highly conducive to creative accomplishment.
