ABSTRACT

An adaptive process by which individuals consciously or subconsciously begin to use verbal and/or nonverbal communication behaviors that are complementary and somewhat synchronized with those behaviors of the person with whom they are communicating. As communication is the mechanism through which clients' needs are identified and counseling assistance is provided, counselors must carefully craft their messages. The content of each message needs to be meaningful for clients so that clients willingly develop their skills to work toward better health and wellness. Karen Stokes focused on the meaning of each verbal or nonverbal cue as well as how the cues were tied to the content of her communication messages. Although Karen initially focused on Sandra's communication behaviors, it became apparent that Sandra had integrated some of Karen's communication patterns.
