ABSTRACT

Social support networks are one way through which elder adults can establish a sense of independence in their lives. A common assumption is that families of older adults will meet all or many of their social support needs. As the life expectancy in the United States continues to increase, elderly adults across the nation are faced with the challenge of physical relocation because of increasing medical needs. In all scenarios, the process of relocation inevitably requires lifestyle changes. The community in which Kristin A. Lindholm resides prides itself on maintaining the dignity of its residents, offering an independent lifestyle, and providing ample opportunities for social engagement. Kris Ernst' experiences provide an illuminating example of how life transitions, such as severe health problems, retirement, bereavement, and weak family ties, can lead to social isolation and a feeling of despondency among older adults in assisted-living facilities.
