ABSTRACT

When Mr. S arrived in the telemetry unit at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, he was not happy to be there. His discharge had been delayed, and he badly wanted to be at home. The delay was especially frustrating because it coincided with his wedding anniversary. Sympathetic to his distress, nurse Lynn Pierce had an idea. She and her coworkers organized a surprise, romantic celebration for the couple. “We all got together and went down to the gift shop. We bought his wife a present,” she remembers. “Then we got the fancy dishes from the doctor's lounge and rolled in a romantic, candlelit dinner for them.” The man, previously disgruntled, thanked the staff fondly before he left.
