ABSTRACT

When I came to this school, I believed that school was for people who could not survive on the street. Then I realized that no one survives on the street, so I thought I would give school a try again. When I got here, I was put into a room and handed bookwork. I thought, “Great, just another school.” Then I met Andrew, my teacher, in the literacy programme. He showed me that learning isn’t as boring as I thought, but I still had doubts. When we went to UBC for the multimedia unit where I turned one of my poems into a CD, and worked on some videos, I sat back and thought, “There is so much more to school than just the building.”
