ABSTRACT

This chapter presented a brief but comprehensive introduction to the ELT context in India, highlighting the curricular challenges created by its roots in the colonial past. It also reflected on the varied learning opportunities the ELT situation created as an English teacher, enabling to grow into a professional and make my modest contribution meaningful. To return to the status of the English language in India, the process of nativization continues at a rapid pace. There is a strong case for exploring them in order to understand how the multilingual and sociocultural context of India enriches the original models. Such explorations must include the pedagogical implications of Indian English so that the teaching and learning communities will appreciate their role in decolonizing English language education. Curricular reform in this direction will not only raise the Indian users' awareness of the nativization of English but also encourage them to contribute consciously and more actively to the process.
