This chapter synthesizes experimental research on reading text from screen focusing on how reading is affected by specific typographic variables and reading speed, and how the mechanics of reading on screen (i.e., scrolling) relate to the reading task. The review evaluates the contribution that such research can make both to our understanding of how we read from screen and to informing the design of documents which support effective reading.
