ABSTRACT

The human voice is the most important sound category our auditory system has to analyze. How the wealth of information it contains-linguistic as well as paralinguistic-is processed by the auditory cortex is a complex, important, and still unresolved issue. In this chapter we review recent neuroimaging studies that suggest the involvement in voice processing of several parts of the superior temporal sulcus (STS) bilaterally. The significance of these “voice-selective” activations, as well as their possible functional roles, is discussed hereafter.
