ABSTRACT

I have long been an admirer of Jean Mandler's work, and recently entered into a public conversation with her through a commentary on her article “Perceptual and Conceptual Processes in Infancy” (Mandler, 2000a). My contribution to this volume is a continuation of that conversation, namely a reply to her replies (Mandler, 2000b) in the same issue of the Journal of Cognition and Development. I have left my original commentary intact, assuming that not all readers of this volume will have read my original remarks.
