ABSTRACT

The development of a sense of self is a complex process for all children, and one that holds special challenges for children with learning disabilities (LD). The last decade of research on self-concept has changed our understanding of the structure of self-concept and its relationship to self-esteem (Harter, 1999). Children with LD vary in their self-esteem despite their negative academic experiences. Although studies have begun to identify factors related to self-esteem for children with LD, it is our premise that awareness, understanding, and acceptance of one's disability are critical elements to the development of positive self-regard. This chapter reviews the current literature on self-concept, self-esteem, and self-understanding in children with LD. Methods for developing positive self-understanding and self-esteem are discussed.
