ABSTRACT

Although many may see the use of computers and technology in the development of SEL as an oxymoron, there is much to be said for its integration into the school curriculum and the work of the school counselor. To some people, it strikes them as odd that one would want to use computers to help in socialemotional development. However, computer technology provides students with a wonderful way to practice important social-emotional skills. There is something alluring and engaging about the computer, as it is a tool with which many students enjoy working. For children with special learning needs, the computer offers them the capacity to relate their personal experiences using something other than just words. From work done in the field of multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1983), the computer provides many students with alternative ways of expressing their experiences that would not be possible with just pencil and paper. This chapter explores the role of computers and technology and how counselors can integrate them into the curriculum to help students develop a core set of skills related to emotional intelligence.
