ABSTRACT
In their most idyllic version, the Olympic Games are designed to be peaceful competitions in which athletes from all over the world gather together in friendship. Unfortunately, this idealistic definition has rarely—if ever—been evident. One reason, although certainly not the only explanation, is that the media have transformed the games into something beyond mere sporting contests.
