ABSTRACT

Questions like these are commonly asked by educators during computerassisted language learning (CALL) presentations, on electronic discussion lists, and in CALL publications. These questions are typically answered by CALL practitioners who use their extensive experience to respond. Of course, none of these questions has a simple, or single, answer. In addition, because CALL is constantly revising itself due to rapid changes in teaching and technological innovations, the answers can change from one day to the next. More problematic is that, when we turn to the research for answers, we cannot always find what we are looking for. Although practitioner knowledge adds much to our understanding of CALL, we also need a solid research foundation that interacts with and supports these conclusions.
