ABSTRACT

This chapter captures the voices and experiences of African American faculty and administrators in academia in order to delineate the implications for mentoring graduate students and faculty. The methodology used in this study involved WebBoard; an online data collection toolData included an initial group interview with eight African American faculty and administrators. Much of the current literature on the African American experience in academia utilizes the deficit model in which the individual is the focus of the chapter rather than the collective consciousness of the participants. Moreover, current publications in this area lack the thematic link to faculty development and graduate student mentoring programs. The methodology used in this study involved WebBoard, an online data collection tool. Data included an initial group interview with eight African American faculty and administrators. WebBoard data was managed by graduate research assistants and was supplemented by elite interviews with selected respondents and data collected from various other sources.
