ABSTRACT

Webcasting, sometimes labeled the “last frontier” or “the next stage of evolution” of the internet era, has been slow in its diffusion in Australia, due to technical constraints related to internet transmission speeds and bandwidth. Australia officially became a British colony in 1788 and was used as a destination for the transportation of convicts until 1868. Descendants of those convicts and British migrants who settled in the country at various times make up the majority of the nation’s population today. Australian commercial media are also considered the most concentrated in terms of ownership patterns among developed nations, because a handful of large media companies dominate the Australian media landscape through direct and cross ownership among various media outlets and industries. Interestingly, many students either born overseas or are of non-British migrant ancestry, often choose to study a language not related to their ethnic heritage or national origin.
