ABSTRACT

It is common place that the United Kingdom (UK) media industry is one of the strongest in the world and perhaps the one at the forefront in Europe. Newspapers present a remarkable variety that caters for every need and taste, boast high circulation and readership rates, and play a significant role in the formation of public opinion. The UK press market is one of the largest globally, with more than 1,000 newspapers and more than 10,000 magazines distributed in the country. It is clearly beyond the purposes of this study to examine this enormous and ever-growing industry in detail. One of the major characteristics of the written press in the UK is the existence of a large national newspaper sector divided into 14 daily and 15 Sunday titles. The UK magazine sector is large and has been growing consistently over the past decade. There are between 8,800 and 10,000 titles.
