ABSTRACT

Provider—patient communication has been identified as one of the most important factor for improving patient adherence (1–12). However, to be able to use patient—provider communication to increase adherence, a detailed understanding of the mechanisms by which provider—patient communication influences treatment adherence is required. Many of the questions, and perhaps many of the insights, regarding adherence and provider—patient communication are not new. In spite of this, only recently have researchers begun to look at the underlining mechanisms that mediate how provider—patient communication affects treatment adherence.
