ABSTRACT

In 1950, Niels Bohr was looking back at his first attempts in 1944 and 1945 to inspire political leaders to prevent a nuclear arms race following WWII. When looking around, he could note that his fears had come true: the world was in the midst of the cold war.1 So he persisted in his attempt to motivate political leaders to work for increased openness in international political and cultural relations, and this time, he extended an appeal to the world community in the form of an open letter to the United Nations.
