Merriam Webster Online (2005) lists two definitions for the word mediate: “to occupy a middle position; to act through an intervening agency, exhibiting indirect causation, connection, or relation.” The term is said to be “of Middle English origin, from the Late Latin mediatus intermediate, from the past participle of mediare.”
