From Rengert, G.F., and Wasilchick, J. (1985). The use of space in burglary. In Suburban Burglary: A Time and a Place for Everything (53-75). Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas.

Suburban residential burglary, unlike many urban crimes, requires several prior decisions. Many urban burglaries are spontaneous reactions to opportunities that present themselves during the course of daily activity. These spontaneous crimes are called situational crimes and occur while the burglar is working, or on his way to and from another activity. The only real decision is to seize the opportunity at hand.
