ABSTRACT

This chapter progresses through three tasks. First, briefly, at a high level of abstraction, a road map of Philosophy leading to administrative ethics is provided for students of public administration who may not be familiar with Philosophy (hereafter upper case “P” will be used for Philosophy as a discipline, lower case “p” will be used for generic philosophy or thoughtfulness). Second, using categories derived from the still influential analytical school within the sub-discipline of ethics in Philosophy, a taxonomy of the orthodox views in public administration ethics is developed. Third, taking note of what appears to be the cusp of a radical paradigm shift in Philosophy toward “antifoundation- alism,” theories clustered around communitarian ideals are explored. Concluding remarks extend the antifoundational critique to potentially innovative and more reciprocal intercourse between Philosophy and more practical arts like public administration.
