ABSTRACT

The specific goals of every burnout workshop are somewhat different, depending on the needs of the organization and the needs of the participants.* Nevertheless, four general goals can almost always be agreed on.

Explain what burnout is, describe its symptoms and costs for the individual and the organization, and enable participants to diagnose their own levels of burnout.

Provide participants with an opportunity to identify the common burnout-causing stresses in their own work and note the relationship between those stresses and their shared goals and expectations.

Improve participants’ ability to distinguish between stressful work features that are under their control and can be modified, and those that are an inherent part of the work and must be accepted as such.

Examine and expand participants’ use of various individual, social, and organizational coping strategies.
