ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the role of the diabetes educator and the part they play in the process of delivering diabetes education on a continuous basis to children, young people and families. The role of the diabetes educator is 'complex and constantly evolving'. In many countries, the specific role of diabetes educator has not yet been embraced or established. Therefore, the role of diabetes educator will include sharing and collaborating with respect to knowledge, care and approaches with healthcare teams and other healthcare providers, and, most important, with the child, young person or their family. The diabetes educator's role centres on providing diabetes education that allows the person to acquire self-care diabetes skills and to change behaviour to promote self-management. The diabetes educator can also assess the learning styles of the child or adolescent and their parents, personality traits, and consider the cognitive and developmental level before embarking on diabetes care education.
