ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the practice development can enable practitioners to improve dignity in care through creative, transformational ways of learning supported by skilled facilitation. It discusses the challenges within complex healthcare contexts and will identify core components that will help sustain and enable ongoing practice development. The programme of practice development that ran for six months brought eight nurses and eight older people together to explore the meaning and understanding of dignity in care, using a variety of creative approaches such as collage and dance. Through discussions with the staff involved, and more general conversations with the clinical teams, it became apparent that development directly targeted at practice was needed to enhance staff awareness and understanding of the concept of dignity from the perspective of patients with dementia. Staff were invited to form a working group to support the ongoing development of practice relating to dignity in care for patients with dementia.
