ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the dignity in relation to children. It explores the meaning of dignity for children and demonstrate how dignity-promoting practice is as important for children and their families as for any other group. The chapter explores the social construction of children and their position in society, and looks at areas in which dignity can be promoted or diminished for children in practice and consider the environment, the processes and the people involved in the care of the child. To be able to protect and promote the dignity of children and young people in a range of settings, we need to understand what dignity means when it is linked with young people. The chapter discusses some of the challenges to these ideals in caring for children when they are in hospital or cared for in the community and how dignity-promoting care can be delivered in practice.
