ABSTRACT

In an unprecedented legal action, the English courts were asked to decide whether to sanction an operation to separate the month-old twins, which could save Jodie, but mean the killing of Mary.

Medical experts at Manchester said that a failure to operate would mean that both children were likely to die within three to six months. Separation of the twins would, according to the medical experts, mean that one twin would die immediately but the other might survive, although her medical condition would need careful monitoring.
