ABSTRACT

According to figures collected from the Health Insurance Commission of Australia, since 1987, there have been about 1,358 girls sterilised and since Marion’s case in 1992, 1,045 girls sterilised. The authors of the report, Susan Brady and Dr Sonia Grover, claim that these figures are probably an underestimate because they cover only sterilisations for which a Medicare claim has been processed. The figures therefore exclude: • sterilisations other than by hysterectomy, tubal ligation and endometrial

oblation; • sterilisation by hospital doctors on girls who were public patients in public

hospitals.
