ABSTRACT

The pilots managed to cut by 15 per cent the average time taken to deal with offenders on bail from charge to case conclusion. Similarly, there was a 38 per cent reduction in the average time between charge and plea and directions hearing. Custody cases were reduced by an average of 30 per cent. Saving time also meant saving money and pilots showed that the likely annual savings to the Criminal Justice System as a whole were just under £16 million. The CPS played a significant part in making the pilot a success. A single CPS lawyer took ownership of the case that previously had been managed by several lawyers, which improved continuity and handling. After the pilots finished we began an intensive round of training for all our lawyers and caseworkers.

All of those involved in the Criminal Justice System are committed to reducing delays within it. These changes will help us reach this important goal.
