ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the nexus between the ‘real’ and the fictional through a consideration of The Lawyer and the Libertine, a novel by Australian High Court Judge, Ian Callinan. It addresses the homologous relationship between masculinity, law and public life, out of which conventional images of ‘the lawyer’ emerge. It shows how popular culture, popular fiction, in particular, plays a role in affirming such images.
