ABSTRACT

Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Greece and Luxembourg have imposed marketing bans on some biotechnology products despite existing EU approvals. The EC Commission has not taken steps to overturn the bans, despite the fact that the EU’s scientific committee has found no justification for them. On 13 May 2003, the US, Argentina and Canada initiated WTO consultations with the EU regarding what they consider as a de facto moratorium on biotechnology product approvals.
