ABSTRACT
Europe has not been at the forefront of environmental information systems at regional and global levels. There is extensive national expertise, especially at the research level, but Europe itself cannot claim to be a leader in spatial data infrastructures for dealing with environmental data from a wide variety of data sources. This chapter reviews the experience from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US in spatial data infrastructure, to draw lessons on the efficient and effective development of systems for global environmental monitoring.
