ABSTRACT

Core framework geospatial data is regarded as a public good, and is provided free of charge via the Internet to encourage use, consistency and standardisation. Costs for private benefits, which are seen to be beyond the public good, are borne by the user. Whilst data provided via the Internet is free of charge, GeoConnections operates a pricing model to facilitate efficiency. Essentially, this means that data not provided electronically is provided at the marginal cost of reproduction or at ‘nuisance fees’ that discourage requests for data in this format.
