EEA objectives The EEA is a European Community body with the aim ‘to establish a seamless environmental information system’ (EEA 1999b). More specifically, the mission of the EEA aims:

The EEA was set up in May 1990 by Council Regulation and commenced operations in 1994. The main objectives of the EEA in carrying out this mandate are twofold:

(1) To assist the Community and member countries to identify, frame, prepare and implement sound and effective environmental policy measures and legislation, and to monitor, evaluate and assess actual and expected progress in the implementation and results of such measures.
