ABSTRACT

Licensing, distribution and dissemination Most mapping agencies control the distribution and dissemination of their data through licensing procedures. Map data is increasingly being produced and supplied in digital format. Mapping agencies therefore offer different licences that are designed to meet the requirements of different users. For example, users who may simply wish to display a limited number of fixed map extracts on the Internet can use a different (and less expensive) licence than those who wish to take material and incorporate it into an application for onward sale and licensing. Licences for data that is to be exploited commercially are often treated separately, and in many cases mapping institutes collect royalties from the value of the final product.
