ABSTRACT

Europeans dominated criminology in the nineteenth century, and Americans in the twentieth. Although it is much too early to tell, grounds exist for predicting that European criminology will reassert itself in the twenty-first century and provide a counterweight that will make statements like that in the opening sentence passe´. In sheer numbers of departments, students and academic specialists, the Americans will likely remain predominant. In terms of influence on government, public policy, and theory, and the institutionalization of research programmes, the Europeans may soon outshine the Americans.
