ABSTRACT

Since the beginning of 1998, a ‘restorative detention’ pilot project has been active in six Belgian prisons. In 2000, more quickly than expected, the policy makers saw to it that the restorative detention project had taken root in the Belgian penal establishment as a whole. Given its all-inclusive history and due to a lack of space, here we will only briefly sketch the startup and development of the ‘restorative detention’ project. 1
