ABSTRACT

Serious crimes against humanity and international law were carried out during the Kosovo war (February 1998–June 1999), some of which amount to genocide. These atrocities against the Albanian civil population were carried out by Serb and Yugoslav police, military and paramilitary forces. Such crimes include: murder, infliction of serious physical and mental injury, torture, the forced deportation of the population, rape, hostage taking, collective punishment, sending people to concentration camps, forced labour, and the looting and destruction of homes and dwelling-places. During this period, several massacres against unprotected civilians from different age groups were carried out, such as, for example, the massacres in Likoshan, Polklek, Obri, Sushice, Gollubovc, Racak, etc. All these crimes and massacres were well organised and coordinated by the Serbian authorities in order to intimidate Albanians, create a climate of insecurity and force them to flee their ancestral homes.
