ABSTRACT

The chapter reports results from a multi-method study on elder abuse and neglect in German nursing homes. Its focus is on qualitative interviews in a sample of eight facilities. Interviews provide evidence on the phenomenology of elder abuse and neglect in residential care. The chapter covers physical abuse, psychological abuse and verbal aggression, neglect, inappropriate uses of mechanical and chemical restraints and paternalistic and infantilising behaviour. Data from a questionnaire study among nursing home staff and from an analysis of public prosecutor files complement the results of the interview study. The text discusses the relative contributions of different data types and the importance of using multiple perspectives in the study of elder abuse and neglect in residential care.
