ABSTRACT
Hue and cry was a way of catching offenders who had evaded the night watchmen and constable. On hearing the call to hue and cry, everyone in the neighbourhood was expected to join in the pursuit of the offender. Hue and cry was repealed in 1827, being relegated to the name of a news-sheet that advertised wanted men and newly released prisoners.
