ABSTRACT
The Metropolitan Police/New Police came into being when the Metropolitan Police Act 1829 replaced London’s parochial systems of law and order with a centralized force accountable to the Home Secretary. The new force’s role was to prevent crime in the city through rigorous patrolling.
