ABSTRACT
Police powers are conferred on the police so that they can perform their law enforcement functions. In the UK, police powers have been established in an ad hoc way through Acts of Parliament and the common law. In modern times, the greatest rationalization of this ad hoc provision of police powers occurred with the passing of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
