The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) was the first piece of legislation to provide a comprehensive regulatory structure governing the interception of communications, access to communications data, covert surveillance, the use of informants and other covert human intelligence sources, and the decryption of encrypted material.
