ABSTRACT
At its simplest, crime reduction is any measure or variety or measures aimed at reducing crime. The term has become associated chiefly with targeted and relatively short-term situational and policing measures put in place by a variety of local agencies and in line with central government performance targets. More accurately in the contemporary UK context, crime reduction is an approach that gives primacy to technical and numerical measurement and the trappings of a ‘scientific’ evaluation of effectiveness.
