ABSTRACT
Deaths in police custody (DPCs) may be evidence of system failure or weakness in the provision of policing services: people detained in police custody are in a vulnerable condition, particularly detainees with mental health problems. There is great concern, therefore, to ensure that information on the extent and patterns of DPCs is properly gathered and profiled.
