ABSTRACT

Originally created by Ted Willis for the film The Blue Lamp, PC (later Sergeant) George Dixon was the central character of the longrunning BBC television series, Dixon of Dock Green. Dixon represented the quintessential ideal of the British bobby, practising community policing long before the term was coined in the 1970s. Standing for an ideal of policing that has continuing resonance today, Dixon is regularly evoked by those seeking to reform policing practice.
