ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to tackle abuse at the organizational level with a focus on action to reform organizations. This chapter will take the position that an organization can be abusive if it does not take effective steps to protect its staff from such threats. Where the threat is internal, there are two forms of abuse. The first is inter-personal abuse including bullying. This will be called ‘Negative Inter-personal Behaviour’ (NiB). The second is organizational abuse where systems and processes directly fail to support, undermine or otherwise cause harm to employees. This will be termed ‘Negative Organizational Behaviour’ (NoB).
