ABSTRACT

The methods, scales and effectiveness of beach, coastal and ocean management differ enormously from one location to another. This case study illustrates current international large-scale ocean management policies and how, if at all, these policies filter down to the national, regional and local scales to ultimately influence beach management. It also considers future marine management policies at the international, national and local levels and discusses future proposed legislation in the UK and Europe, and focuses upon the national coastal management umbrella that is needed for any successful beach management.
