ABSTRACT

Of the qualities that enhance beach attraction or potential for tourism, many authors, for example Micallef et al (1999) and Jones and Phillips (2008), have identified as key parameters: physical aspects such as local geology and geomorphology, biological attributes such as flora and fauna, and a number of socio-economic criteria represented by recreational amenities, access, safety, landscape (aesthetics), archaeology, commercial interests and environmental quality criteria, for example cleanliness, hygiene and toilets facilities. Many award schemes relate to these parameters (see Chapter 8).
