ABSTRACT
Today a great depth of scientific knowledge exists about animals and their welfare. However, it is vital that we translate this wealth of knowledge and expert opinion into action that will improve the welfare of animals in practice and not sit back and expect that it will just happen. This is particularly important in livestock production where commercial, socio-economic and political considerations are often considered as having precedence over animal welfare.
